Flyfishing Census

These census statistics are based on the answers of over a hundred participants and represents a portion of the flyfishing fraternity only. Statistics will be updated regularly as a larger number of fishermen continue to partake in this one of a kind survey.   • The average age of participants is 36 years of age.
  • 99% of participants have been male.
  • 62.2% of participants don't have children that are still dependants.
  • 28.3% of participants save or invest between 1% and 5% of their income. 13.2% don't save at all.
  • The most popular banks amongst participants are Standard Bank at 31.3% and Absa at 27.4%
  • 53.8% of participants consider themselves to be in good physical shape and 73% claim they exercise regularly.
  • Of the participants 88.4% have full medical cover.
  • The average number of properties owned by participants is 1.4
  • The average number of vehicles per household is 2.1
  • The two top vehicle brands amongst flyfishermen are Toyota at 17.7% and Volkswagen at 14%
  • 56.8% of participants don't smoke.
  • 58.4% of participants only drink socially.
  • The top five brands chosen by participants were alcoholic brands with Jameson coming out tops and Castle a close second.
  • The top three publications that participants buy regularly are TCFF (26.5%), Africa's Original Flyfishing Magazine (9.7%) and Men's Health (7.9%).
  • The most preferred species to fish for is trout at 64.1% Yellowfish come in second at 16.9%
  • The species that is fished the most for is trout at 67.9% Yellowfish again come second with 16.9%
  • 72.9% of flyfishermen did more flyfishing this year than the same period of time last year.
  • The average flyfisherman gets to do 2.4 days of fishing a month.
  • On average, participants go on 2.1 holidays of five days or more per year. Of those holidays, 60.3% are flyfishing related in some way or another.
  • More than half the participants have been outside South Africa's borders in the last 12 months (50.9%).
  • The average flyfisherman owns 3.5 flyrods.
  • The best value for money flyfishing brand in the eyes of the participants is Stealth (38%). Close on their heels is Xplorer with 28.5%
  • Hardy is considered the most desirable flyfishing brand with 32.5% of votes. Second is Sage (22.5%) and G-Loomis is third with 12.5%
  • The average angler will spend R3798 per year purely on flyfishing equipment. 82% will spend a further R5000 to R20000 on flyfishing related stuff (excluding tackle).
  • 66% of flyfishermen have introduced between 1 and 3 people to the sport.
  • 92.4% of participants are NOT members of FOSAF and only 24.5% of fishermen belong to a club or syndicate.
  • 57.1% of flyfishermen have undertaken professional help with regard to casting, guiding, or fly tying.
  • Of the participants, 13.4% never use the internet for anything flyfishing related (makes you wonder how they filled in the census then?!). 65.3% use it often.
  • 69.3% of flyfishermen have been involved in a sponsored flyfishing event or competition.
  • One in two flyfishermen allege that the flyfishing lifestyle never influences other decision making.
  • The majority of flyfishermen (45%) would easily spend between R100 and R200 on a flyfishing related book or pocket guide.
