The sand is settling after Cyclone Favio which hit the Bazaruto Archipelago on the 22nd of February 2007 and the huge task of restoring Benguerra Lodge and surroundings to its former glory has began. The winds of up to 250 km’s per hour caused significant damage to our lodge, the local community and the indigenous forest surrounding the lodge. The local community has been worse hit as most of them lost their homes. Benguerra Lodge has committed itself to assisting the community with sourcing much needed aid to provide shelter, food and water supply. After careful deliberation and thorough assessment of the damage caused by the storm to the lodge and the indigenous forest, we have decided to close for a period of 6 to 9 months to complete the rebuild. We have to cancel all provisional and confirmed bookings with immediate effect up to the end of August 2007. A further assessment on the progress will be made in May. Marike Lategan from our reservations office will be contacting all bookings affected by this closure of the lodge. Refunds will be made as soon as Benguerra Lodge received settlement from our Insurance Company. We would like to thank everyone for their support thus far. Many people have asked if they could assist the community on Benguerra Island in any way. We have started a disaster fund on behalf of the community to aid in the rebuilding process. We will also have a project together with horticultural experts to restore the indigenous forest.
