Vaal report.
Wednesday 7 March to Friday 9 March
Wednesday saw the river flowing at a mere 8 cumecs. The normal no rain flow rate is 15 cumecs. The lower flow rate has caused the river to start clearing nicely with clarities of about 50 centimetre range. A lot of the larger fish have dropped back to the safety of the pools, leaving fish in the half kilo range in the fast shallow water of most of the popular venues below the Barrage.

The cooling clear conditions have been yielding exceptional dry fly fishing in the afternoons. Fishing over pods of rising fish with emergers one is able to pick off fish at will, provided light tippets are used, and of course drag free drifts. When your high riding pattern is being ignored and fish appear to be rising, its time to fish an emerger.

Just by having the fly in the surface film and not on it will make the difference between no fish and a fish every good drift. The best fish of the season can be caught on dry as we proved on Wednesday evening with a fish of 4.3 kgs caught, photographed and released! Friday 9 March I was was guiding 2 flyfishermen from Pretoria, as usual the water was very low with just small fish being caught. The river started rising at about mid morning,if you have ever been fortunate enough to fish a rising river you may have experienced the champagne fishing we did. Numbers of huge fish started moving into shallow water to feed and we were there to sight fish to them. Bonanza! The largest fish was a beauty of 3kgs and the clients also caught large numbers of fish in the 1.5 to 2kg range and learned how to fish properly. A wonderful experience. The river is currently flowing at 18 cumecs. Visibility is between 50 and 70 centimetres.
