About The Mavungana Flyfishing Centre

Michael Cronje, John Thoabala and Jim Keaveney from Mavungana Flyfishing writes:
Sunrise: 6:24
Sunset: 17:27
Average daily temperature: 19,8 degrees
Monthly rainfall: 3mm
Average river temperature: 14 degrees
Average stillwater temperature: 16 degrees

Largest fish (since last report): 2.8kg Rainbow Trout
Current popular flies: Black and Olive Fritz, Fritz Booby, San Juan Worm. GRHE, Prince Nymph, Walkers Killer, Purple Lady, Papa Roach, Zonker Leech, DDD, Epoxy Buzzer.

What to expect:
A long period of warm weather has been interrupted by a passing cold front making fishing conditions fairly tough, but not impossible. Make sure you still keep the sun-block at hand (even though it’s cold you’re still likely to burn) as well as a wind breaker and fleece jacket for the windier, colder days.

How to fish:
Basically, most of the fish have been taken fairly deep with chunky, dark flies on a slow retrieve. At dawn and dusk stick to the floating line but as it warms up switch to an inter or sinking line. Start you’re retrieves fast and slow down gradually if the takes are not forthcoming. Keep a few brighter coloured flies at hand ‘cause spawning season is just around the corner.
