The White Death fly was created by Robin Fick and Jan De Jager in the 1980's and was named after a comment by de Jager, who said the fly would "be the death of all trout in this dam." Designed after Fick carefully observed trout in Natal feeding on caddis in the late afternoon. All attempts were rejected by the feeding fish that afternoon, which birthed a South African staple.
Designed to be fished on a floating line and long leader to fish feeding on a hatch just subsurface, making it a versatile fly.
